16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Ever hear about people fasting for a reason and continuously complain about how hungry and tired they are? I’ve been guilty of saying things like “man I’m so hungry, only 3 more hours until I can eat!” That is not what God wants us to do when we are fasting. We fast to focus ourselves on Christ and more on our relationship with Him. We fast to lean on Christ for help when we are weak. We fast to let Christ speak to us in a way that we wouldn’t be able to focus on if we weren’t taking the time to devote to sacrifice. WE DO NOT FAST TO TELL OTHERS WE ARE FASTING! Many people always feel the need to tell others “Oh, I’m fasting and it’s so tough.” That tells me that they aren’t doing this to better themselves but more so to make themselves look more “christian” to those around them. Try it for yourself, but be sure to focus on Christ and prayer and not on telling everyone else who you’re doing.
